Working together
to bring change

About Us

In early 2015 the Rural Development Minister Michelle O‟Neill, MLA urged rural dwellers across Northern Ireland to get involved with a Local Action Group (LAG) to shape, guide and deliver positive transformation in their communities.

Under the guidance of the EU-wide LEADER Programme, ten LAGs were set-up throughout Northern Ireland, bringing together rural dwellers and a range of farming, community, business and elected representatives to form a partnership in the delivery of a £70million Rural Development Programme allocation.

The formation of LAGs offered local people a real opportunity to shape, guide and deliver positive transformation in delivering tangible improvements for the betterment of our rural communities.

Following a series of public meetings, across Northern Ireland to inform local people about the process of becoming a LAG Member, the Newry, Mourne and Down area attracted 278 wider LAG Members.

It was these LAG members who nominated and voted in a LAG board– 13 Social Partners from a range of backgrounds including community, voluntary sector, farming and rural business representatives. Furthermore, 12 elected representatives (Local Councillors) were nominated onto the Board by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
